The Freedom of Mobility
This book is about a type of freedom we Americans often take for granted - the freedom to move about as we wish. One of the strongest symbols of that freedom is the 4x4 - the "go anywhere" vehicle. Americans are buying them in ever increasing numbers. Today, almost 50% of new vehicles sold are light trucks - mostly 4x4 pickups and sport utility vehicles.

Jeep with Irene and Hershey overlooking the Clearwater River. Del Albright of the BlueRibbon Coalition says:
"If there ever was a handbook or a 'bible' for off-road four-wheel drive enthusiasts, Brad DeLong's book, 4-Wheel Freedom: The Art of Off-Road Driving, is it. It achieves a comprehensive overview of four wheeling that makes it a necessity for all off-road drivers."

FOUR WHEELER Magazine, January 1998, says:
"Four Wheel Freedom is the newest book on a topic that can't have too many good books written. It's a must read for four-wheelers with a conscience."

Sport-utes and pickups are versatile - they'll carry both people and lots of stuff, getting you there safely in all kinds of weather and over all kinds of terrain. You'll be able to use your 4x4 even more effectively by reading "4-Wheel Freedom" and by spending time with some of the off-road teachers mentioned in the book and on this WebSite.

Many people who buy 4x4s want them mainly for the traction they provide on slippery roads. Of course, traction is only part of getting to your destination safely. 4-Wheel Freedom covers skid avoidance, getting unstuck, and other tips to make winter driving easier and more fun.

4-Wheeling and the Environment
Those of us interested in outdoor recreation and the freedom of mobility have learned to use our vehicles in the most ecological way possible. Today, off-roaders are recognized for their contributions to the environment, not for their destruction of it. All across the country, 4-wheelers are working with the Forest Service and other agencies to restore trails, rebuild bridges, and help out with search and rescue operations.

Camping at the Three Rivers Campground 4-WD & SPORT UTILITY MAGAZINE, May 1997, says:
"...a mini encyclopedia about the art of four-wheeling...Five separate chapters cover driving off the paved path and provide information worthy of any 4x4 training course in the country. The chapter on winching is more comprehensive than some the owners' manuals we've seen...Our impression of 4-Wheel Freedom is we wish we had written this book. It is very much along the lines of what we would have written had we beaten Brad DeLong to the punch..."

Owning a 4x4 gives you a feeling of freedom and rugged independence, traditional values that help keep our country strong. Outdoor recreation promotes family values, too. What greater satisfaction is there than watching your son or daughter grow and develop, as they acquire the skills of outdoor recreation and off-road driving - camping and hiking in the beautiful backcountry, fishing in a crystal clear mountain stream in the crisp early morning, or just being together as a family around a campfire in high desert country, watching the sunset fade in the dusk.
